Summary:
The Performance Evaluation Laboratory is a research unit of the Department of Computer Science at Brigham Young University. The laboratory specializes in measuring and analyzing computer system performance and using the acquired information to make improvements to both hardware and software systems. To perform this type of work it is necessary for us to acquire data from existing systems. A large part of our effort is expended in building hardware and software monitoring tools to obtain the needed information. This includes hardware and software tools for collecting disk I/O traces and hardware mechanisms for collecting processor address and instruction traces. The collected data is analyzed and the results are used to make modifications to both hardware and software systems to improve performance with respect to various metrics such as power consumption or speed. It is our goal to make all collected and generated data available to interested parties to enable researchers to perform reproducible work.
